A massive fire tore through a vacant Polk County flea market building on February 27th, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The inferno, which erupted around 5 p.m. in Cedartown, Georgia, was so intense that it engulfed the building and the surrounding powerlines, affecting power to the surrounding area for hours. Firefighters battled the blaze, dousing the structure with water for hours in a desperate bid to contain it.

The flames reached over 40 feet high, making it difficult to extinguish the fire. Formerly a Jockey clothing manufacturing plant, the building more recently housed a popular flea market. Occupancy details at the time of the fire were lacking.

Thankfully, there were no injuries, and there were no people in the building at the time of the fire. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire in the former flea market, which could take weeks. Radiation from the fire was so intense that police had to shut down some of the nearby roads. By 8 p.m., only the walls of this over 100-year-old building were left standing. It is unclear whether automatic sprinkles were provided in the building.

Firefighters battled the blaze using tall ladder trucks on the 100-year-old building.

Despite how avoidable these incidents are, improper management and protection make vacant warehouse fires a common occurrence. Risk Logic can help owners identify potential risks at their facilities and help them understand the importance of protecting their unoccupied buildings. RLI engineers will inspect and recommend ways to prevent fires and control damages including installing automatic sprinklers and fire alarms. Fire alarms provide prompt notification of the local fire department and could limit damage to your business.
