A five-alarm fire destroyed a historic church in Spencer, Massachusetts, on June 2nd, 2023. Dozens of firefighters responded to this massive fire at the First Congregational Church of Spencer. The church was over 160 years old, dating back to the 18th century. The structure had a large steeple and bell, mostly made up of wood, that dates back to the 1800s.
As the first responders reached the scene, it was a distressing sight of the steeple billowing with thick smoke and flames that quickly engulfed the structure. Eyewitnesses reported seeing lightning strike the church, but the investigation is still ongoing. Most of the building was lost in the fire, and authorities will demolish it, although some parts of the church remain standing. This was the second lightning strike at the church. Back in 1862 was the first incident, and the building had to be reconstructed. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the building stayed empty during the fire. The Pastor would like to rebuild the church but is unsure if this is possible at this time. It does not appear that automatic sprinklers were provided.
