A fire destroyed an Illinois pipe manufacturing plant on Monday, April 15th. That morning, employees at Rovanco Piping Systems reported smoke inside one of the buildings. As thick smoke rose from the building, several loud explosions rocked the area, prompting nearly 30 fire departments to rush to the scene. The temperature was so intense that onlookers described the building as appearing to melt. Authorities declared the facility, which held three manufacturing buildings within 20 acres and totaled more than 150,000 square feet, a total loss. Estimated damages range between $25 and $40 million.

Firefighters were unaware that the fire had spread above them through the ceiling. As they worked below, the ceiling collapsed, injuring one firefighter with burns to the face and hand. The building was completely destroyed by the fire. Rovanco Piping Systems, a large manufacturing company, has been owned and operated since 1969. The establishment is a leading manufacturer of pre-engineered, prefabricated, and pre-insulated pipe and piping systems. It offers a high-quality alternative to outdated, field-insulated piping—delivering more effective products with cost-saving solutions. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. While officials confirmed the presence of chemicals at the site, they reported no immediate air quality concerns and believe most of the chemicals burned off during the fire.

Firefighters assured the hotspots were fully extinguished among the smoldering debris

How Risk Logic Can Help Your Company

To take preventative measures against a building fire outbreak, Risk Logic can help assess your company's building to ensure that nearby fire hydrants provide adequate water pressure. Improperly placed hydrants may delay firefighters, forcing them to bring their own water supply, which costs valuable time and increases the risk of total loss. If you're unsure whether your facility has sufficient hydrant placement, contact us today to take proactive steps toward improving fire safety and reducing potential losses.
